Tour Details
When the Catholics first
arrived in New York City in 1808 they began plans to build a great
cathedral - St. Patrick's - out in the middle of nowhere. It was a
large patch of unused farmland on what would become 5th Avenue.
In the wake of St. Pat's came other churches, then mansions and then
upscale stores. John D. Rockefeller specifically chose his location
due to its proximity to St. Pat's, so the church helped to make the
neighborhood what it is today.
On this walking tour conducted in honor of Pope Benedict XVI's visit
to New York City you'll visit the sites and hear the interesting
stories told about the churches, luxury hotels, stores and offices
that populate that famous 10 block stretch of 5th Avenue. Although
we may not be able to tour the inside of St. Patrick's Cathedral,
you will see this amazing landmark and learn about its place in New
York City history.
